Read the council press release below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;A statue of the celebrated suffragette Emily Davison could grace Epsom\u2019s rejuvenated Market Place after the Strategy and Resources Committee voted last night to help fund the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A group of\nlocal residents are leading a campaign to raise money to install a memorial to\nEmily Davison, who died in Epsom, four days after being knocked down by the\nKing\u2019s horse during the 1913 Derby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Emily\nDavison Memorial Project was formed at the beginning of 2018 (the centenary of\nwomen gaining the vote) with the aim to install a life-size statue of Emily\nDavison, sitting on a contemporary granite bench, in the Market Place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project has\nbeen a community initiative and Epsom &amp; Ewell Borough Council has supported\nthe proposal; agreeing a possible location for the artwork (with Surrey County\nCouncil) and also agreeing to take ownership and maintain the statue once it is\ninstalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Emily\nDavison Memorial Project has been busy selecting and commissioning an artist\nand interacting with the various bodies necessary. They have also been fund\nraising, with the aim of securing the \u00a350,000 required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Eber\nKington, Chairman of the Council\u2019s Strategy and Resources Committee explained\n\u201cdespite a very active and positive funding campaign and widespread support,\nthe Emily Davison Memorial Project has experienced difficulties in securing\nhigh level donations. At committee, it was agreed to use developer funding\nmoney, which can only be used for environmental improvements in the area in and\naround the town centre, to support the fund with a donation of up to \u00a320,000,\nenabling the Emily Davison Memorial Project to unlock additional larger funding\ncontributions to the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe artwork\nwill be an important monument in our town centre, referencing a key moment in\nEpsom\u2019s history. I think it\u2019s a piece that will engage the community and it\nwill add to a number of statues of suffragettes installed nationally in the\npast few years\u201d.<\/p>\n<cite>Epsom &amp; Ewell Council Press Release<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It is time that Emily Davison is properly recognised for the part she played in securing women\u2019s right to vote.
