On Tuesday 11th September 2018 a new statue of Emily Wilding Davison was unveiled by the Duchess of Northumberland and the Northumberland County Council\u2019s civic head Jeff Watson. Dr Subo Emanuel and Philippa Bilton were present for the Emily Davison Memorial Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statue was commissioned by Northumberland County Council and was made by Durham sculpture Ray Lonsdale. Emily moved to her family’s home in Longhorsley near Morpeth when her father died in 1893. Although an annual commemoration of Davison\u2019s life is held at St Mary\u2019s church in Morpeth, there has previously been no prominent memorial to her life and achievements other than her grave in the town. An information panel has also be installed in Carlisle Park to highlight the significant role Emily played in the suffragette movement, something also planned for Epsom, It includes a walking trail to help visitors and local residents, in particular the younger generation, learn more about her efforts and her close links to the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On seeing the images of the unveiling Vice chair of the EDMP Paul Taylor said “Seeing this has made all the committee determined that a statue of Emily will be placed in the town she never left. We are now so near to making this happen. We have a design, we have the permission from Surrey County Council and Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, we have a location in the town centre all we need now is the money to make it happen”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
